Preparing for Spring Boating Season
It may be the first day of Spring but in the Midwest it’s not quite boating season just yet. Nevertheless, the days are getting longer and before you know it, lake days will be upon us. As we get closer to those long awaited spring boating days it's time to start prepping to maximize your boating experience this season.
De-Winterization
You likely had your boat winterized before storing it this past off-season which means you will need to get it ready for spring boating. We could go into the entire process but to save you the hassle we recommend having winterization and de-winterization done by the professionals to ensure this is done properly. Schedule your de-winterization now before spots fill up!
Upgrades & Accessories
Now is the time to purchase and install any new upgrades to your boat such as sound systems and electronics so they are finished in time for ice-out. These kinds of projects can take months from time of order, to delivery and install time. It’s also smart to get out all the water toys and wash them all thoroughly. Take the time to inspect your lines & tow ropes for tears or fraying and re-coil them. Same with inner tubes and lake floats, along with checking for leaks or weak points.
Warranty Work
It’s always smart to check with your dealer and boat manufacturer to ensure there have been no recalls or warranty work that needs to be done. Go through your boat and ensure everything is in working order, if not make a list of what needs replacing or fixing and get the parts ordered now so you’re not waiting for them later on.
Spring Cleaning
Just as we spring clean our houses and closets out, your boat and trailer can use a good cleaning and detail after sitting all winter. Be sure to use marine safe products, waxes and cleaners. Avoid using products for your home/car as they can damage the vinyl and gelcoat.
Registration, Licensing and Local Laws
Take a look at your boat's registration and confirm it’s current, put a new clean copy in your boat. Ensure your boat decals are not peeling or in-need of replacing. Get up-to-date on local laws. Whether your a first -time boater or a veteran behind the wheel it’s important to understand Boating Responsibly.
Safety Check
Have your boat's safety equipment inspected. Ensure you have the right amount and types of PFDs. Check your fire extinguishers to make sure they are filled and not expired, add a first aid kit if you don’t already have one. You can also get a free Vessel Safety Check performed by your local power squadron. Boat owners who pass the inspection are provided with a decal to display. Vessel owners whose vessels need additional maintenance to comply with these standards are provided with safety information and invited back for another free inspection.
More information regarding the Vessel Safety Check program can be found here (SafetySeal.net).
Are You Ready?
We know it isn’t quite time to launch the boat in the midwest yet, but when the ice is out and the temps turn up, you’ll want to be ready. By getting a headstart now on above items will ensure you can make the most out of your time on the water this 2023 season.
